Ingredients
Scale
1 pound fresh strawberries, hulled and halved
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 6–8 lemons)
4 cups cold water
Ice cubes
Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish
Lemon slices, for garnish
Instructions
Combine the halved strawberries and sugar in a medium bowl. Gently mash the mixture with a fork or potato masher to release the juices. Let the strawberries macerate for at least 30 minutes.
Pour the macerated strawberries and sugar mixture into a fine-mesh sieve set over a large pitcher. Press down on the solids with the back of a spoon to extract as much juice as possible. Discard the solids.
Add the fresh lemon juice and 4 cups of cold water to the pitcher. Stir well to combine the strawberry syrup with the lemon and water.
Taste the lemonade. If you prefer it sweeter, dissolve a little extra sugar in a small amount of warm water and add it to the pitcher.
Fill glasses with ice cubes. Pour the fresh strawberry drink over the ice.
Garnish each glass with a fresh mint sprig and a lemon slice for a garden party drinks presentation.
Notes
For a deeper strawberry flavor, you can simmer the macerated strawberries and sugar with 1 cup of water for 5 minutes, then strain. Let it cool before mixing with the remaining cold water and lemon juice.
If you want a slightly different herb garnish, fresh basil pairs wonderfully with strawberries in this pink lemonade photography style.
This recipe makes a beautiful centerpiece for a slow living spring gathering.
