Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Flaky sea salt, for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. In a shallow dish, dissolve the baking soda in 4 cups of water. This is your baking soda bath.
  7. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 1/2 inch thick. Cut the ropes into 1-inch pieces.
  8. Dip each pretzel bite into the baking soda bath for about 30 seconds.
  9. Place the dipped pretzel bites onto the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Brush the tops of the pretzel bites with the beaten egg. Sprinkle generously with flaky sea salt.
  11. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of garlic powder or onion powder to the dough.
  • Serve with cheese sauce, mustard, or cinnamon sugar for dipping.
  • These are best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat briefly in the oven or microwave.
