A quick and flavorful sloppy joe recipe made from scratch, perfect for a weeknight dinner. This recipe uses common pantry ingredients for a delicious, tangy, and slightly sweet sandwich filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 46 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and yellow mustard. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for at least 10 minutes, or longer for flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Serve the sloppy joe mixture hot on hamburger buns.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the garlic.
  • If you prefer a thicker sauce, simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes.
  • Toast your hamburger buns for a better texture.
  • This meat mixture can be made ahead and reheated. It also freezes well for future meals.
  • Serve with your favorite sides like coleslaw or potato chips.
