Make this addictive Saltine Cracker Toffee, known widely as Christmas Crack. This recipe uses only five simple ingredients to create a sweet and salty treat with a buttery toffee layer and a chocolate topping. It is quick to prepare and perfect for holiday gifting or parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Optional: 1 cup chopped nuts or candy cane pieces for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer covering the entire surface.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the butter is melted and the sugar is completely dissolved. Bring the mixture to a full boil and let it boil for exactly one minute, stirring occasionally. Do not overcook.
  3. Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, making sure all crackers are coated.
  4. Bake for 5 minutes. The toffee should be bubbly.
  5. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate sit for 5 minutes to soften.
  6. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the crackers using an offset spatula. If using optional toppings, sprinkle them over the chocolate now.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
  8. Once set, break the toffee bark into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • You do not need a candy thermometer for this recipe; boiling the mixture for one minute is the key to setting the toffee correctly.
  • Use salted crackers for the best sweet and salty contrast.
  • For a different flavor, use milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet.
  • This homemade Christmas treat is excellent for cookie exchanges and gifting.
