Creamy Homemade Hot Cocoa

Make a rich, comforting cup of hot chocolate from scratch that tastes better than any mix. This recipe uses simple ingredients for a smooth, deeply chocolatey winter warmer.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and cinnamon until combined.
  2. Pour in the hot water and whisk constantly over medium heat until the mixture is smooth and glossy, about 1 minute. This dissolves the cocoa solids.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream.
  4. Heat the mixture, stirring often, until it is hot and steaming. Do not let it boil.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Pour the hot cocoa into mugs. Top with marshmallows or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • For an extra rich flavor, replace 1/2 cup of the milk with 2 ounces of finely chopped dark chocolate (70% cacao). Add the chopped chocolate when you add the milk and stir until fully melted.
  • If you are planning your weekly meals, this recipe is quick enough for a busy night.
  • For a lighter version, substitute the heavy cream with an equal amount of milk.
