Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, marshmallows

Instructions

  2. Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth.
  3. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it is hot but not boiling.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and chopped bittersweet chocolate until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth.
  5. Pour into mugs and serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For an even richer hot chocolate, use half-and-half or heavy cream instead of some of the milk.
  • A pinch of cayenne pepper can add a subtle warmth.
  • For a boozy kick, add a splash of your favorite liqueur like Kahlua or Baileys.
  • This recipe is a great base for meal planning for cozy evenings.
