You deserve a truly luxurious flavor experience. This French Hot Chocolate recipe creates a thick, creamy, and velvety sipping chocolate that is far richer than standard hot cocoa. It is perfect for cozy evenings or as a decadent holiday treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3 ounces high-quality dark chocolate (60-70% cacao), finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the whole milk and heavy cream in a small saucepan over medium heat. Heat the mixture until it just begins to steam around the edges; do not let it boil.
  2. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the finely chopped dark chocolate to the warm milk mixture. Let it sit undisturbed for one minute to begin melting.
  3. Whisk the mixture gently until the chocolate is completely melted and the liquid is smooth.
  4. Return the saucepan to low heat. Whisk in the sugar and the pinch of salt. Continue to heat gently for 2 to 3 minutes, whisking constantly, until the hot chocolate thickens slightly and becomes velvety. Do not allow it to boil.
  5. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Pour the rich French hot chocolate into mugs. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a Parisian style, serve this decadent chocolate beverage in small cups.
  • You can top your Chocolat Chaud with fresh whipped cream or a light dusting of cocoa powder.
  • If you prefer a sweeter drink, increase the sugar to 1.5 tablespoons.
  • This recipe makes a thick hot chocolate; for a thinner consistency, add a splash more milk.
