Make fresh, creamy, and tangy tartar sauce in under 10 minutes using simple ingredients. This recipe is superior to store-bought versions and pairs perfectly with fried fish, shrimp, and crab cakes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped dill pickles or sweet pickle relish
  • 2 tablespoons capers, drained and minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Place the mayonnaise in a medium bowl.
  2. Add the chopped pickles (or relish), minced capers, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, onion powder, and black pepper to the bowl.
  3. Stir all ingredients together until they are completely combined and the sauce is smooth.
  4. If using, mix in the fresh parsley.
  5. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed; add more lemon juice for tang or mustard for depth.
  6. Cover the bowl and chill the tartar sauce for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld. This step is important for the best flavor.

Notes

  • For a lighter sauce, substitute half of the mayonnaise with plain Greek yogurt.
  • This sauce is excellent for meal planning; it keeps well in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Serve this sauce with fried fish, fish tacos, or as a dipping sauce for fries.
