Make soft, chewy pretzel dogs at home that taste better than the mall version. This recipe simplifies the classic baking soda bath for perfect, golden-brown pretzel-wrapped hot dogs, ideal for game day or a fun family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (13.8 ounces) refrigerated pizza dough
  • 8 all-beef franks or hot dogs
  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons coarse pretzel salt
  • For Dipping Sauce (Honey Mustard): 1/2 cup Dijon mustard, 1/4 cup honey, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the baking soda bath: In a shallow bowl, mix the boiling water and baking soda until dissolved. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the hot dogs: Pat the beef franks dry with paper towels. Cut the pizza dough into 8 equal strips.
  3. Wrap the dough: Take one strip of dough and wrap it around one hot dog, starting at one end and spiraling to the other, slightly overlapping the dough. Pinch the ends to seal.
  4. Dip the dogs: Carefully dip each wrapped hot dog into the baking soda solution for about 15 seconds, turning to coat all sides. Lift out and let excess drip off.
  5. Place the dipped pretzel dogs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Brush with egg wash: Brush the tops of the pretzel dogs evenly with the beaten egg.
  7. Sprinkle with salt: Immediately sprinkle the tops generously with coarse pretzel salt.
  8. Bake: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the dough is deep golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Make the dipping sauce: While the dogs bake, whisk together the Dijon mustard, honey, and apple cider vinegar until smooth.
  10. Serve the hot pretzel dogs immediately with the honey mustard dip.

Notes

  • For an air fryer option, cook at 370 degrees F for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • You can substitute the pizza dough with your favorite from-scratch chewy pretzel dough recipe.
  • For a cheesy variation, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the egg wash before adding the salt.
  • These are excellent party appetizers for game day.
