Make a classic, versatile barbecue sauce at home that balances sweet, tangy, and smoky flavors. This recipe uses common pantry staples and is perfect for ribs, pulled pork, or chicken.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine the ketchup, water, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, molasses, and mustard in a medium saucepan.
  2. Stir in the smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer gently for 15 minutes, stirring every few minutes to prevent sticking. This allows the flavors to combine.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat. The sauce will thicken slightly as it cools.
  6. Transfer the sauce to an airtight container. You can use it immediately or store it in the refrigerator.
