Make this simple, addictive sweet and salty candy by baking toffee over saltine crackers, then topping with melted chocolate. It hardens into easy-to-break pieces perfect for holidays.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil, then place a layer of saltine crackers in a single layer on the foil.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Boil for exactly one minute.
  3. Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, spreading quickly to cover them completely.
  4. Bake for 12 minutes. The toffee should be bubbling.
  5. Remove the sheet from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate sit for 5 minutes to melt.
  6. Gently spread the melted chocolate over the toffee layer using an offset spatula. Sprinkle with sea salt, if using.
  7. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
  8. Break the hardened toffee into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

  • This recipe is a great alternative to complicated holiday baking; it is much easier than many meal planning desserts.
  • For a different flavor, try using milk chocolate or dark chocolate instead of semi-sweet chips.
