Ingredients
Scale
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
Combine the sugar, cocoa powder, and water in a medium saucepan.
Place the saucepan over medium heat. Whisk the mixture constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is smooth. Do not let it boil rapidly.
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, continuing to whisk for about 1 to 2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly. This step develops the deep chocolate flavor.
Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt until fully combined.
Pour the chocolate sauce into a heatproof jar or container. Allow it to cool on the counter for about 15 minutes. The sauce will thicken significantly as it cools.
Store your homemade chocolate sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave for a thinner consistency.
Notes
For a thicker hot fudge texture, reduce the water by 2 tablespoons.
If the sauce seems too thick after refrigeration, whisk in a teaspoon of warm water or milk until you reach your desired drizzling consistency.
This recipe makes a great base for homemade chocolate milk; simply whisk 3 tablespoons of sauce into 1 cup of cold milk.
