- 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
- Grease an 8×8 inch baking pan.
- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the sweetened condensed milk, granulated sugar, butter, and cocoa powder.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low and continue to cook, stirring constantly, for 5-7 minutes, or until thickened. Do not overcook.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and nuts, if using.
- Pour the fudge into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
- Let the fudge cool completely at room temperature, then cut into squares.
Notes
- For a smoother fudge, you can sift the cocoa powder before adding it to the saucepan.
- If you don’t have a candy thermometer, the fudge is ready when it thickens and starts to pull away from the sides of the pan.
- Store fudge in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
