Ingredients
Scale
1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
1 (15.25 ounce) box yellow cake mix
1 cup caramel bits or chips
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Spread the entire can of apple pie filling evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Do not drain the filling.
Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the apple pie filling layer.
Scatter the caramel bits over the layer of dry cake mix.
Slowly drizzle the melted butter evenly over the top of the cake mix and caramel layer. Do not stir the layers together.
Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the edges are bubbly.
Let the cake cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
For a slow cooker version, layer ingredients as directed in a greased 6-quart slow cooker. Cook on low for 3 to 4 hours or on high for 1.5 to 2 hours.
Add 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon or a pinch of nutmeg to the dry cake mix for extra spice.
If you prefer fresh apples, use about 6 peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples instead of the pie filling, and toss them with 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon before placing them in the dish.
This recipe is a great alternative to complicated meal planning when you need a quick comfort food dessert.
