Create crispy, flavorful baked apple chips in your oven for a healthy, budget-friendly snack. This recipe focuses on achieving the perfect crunch and intense apple flavor without added sugar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large apples (Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°F (95°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. You can peel them if you prefer, but it’s not necessary for crispness.
  3. Core the apples. You can use an apple corer or cut around the core.
  4. Slice the apples as thinly as possible, about 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick. A mandoline slicer is ideal for uniform, paper-thin slices. If slicing by hand, use a very sharp knife.
  5. Arrange the apple slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets, ensuring they do not overlap.
  6. If using, mix the cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl. Lightly sprinkle the mixture over the apple slices.
  7. Bake for 1 to 2 hours, or until the apple slices are dry and slightly crisp. The exact time will depend on the thickness of your slices and your oven.
  8. Flip the apple slices halfway through the baking time to ensure even drying.
  9. Once baked, turn off the oven and let the apple chips cool completely inside the oven with the door slightly ajar. This helps them crisp up further.
  10. Store the cooled apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.

Notes

  • For best results, use apples that are firm and have a good sugar content.
  • To prevent browning, you can soak the apple slices in a solution of 1 tablespoon lemon juice to 1 cup of water for a few minutes before baking. Pat them dry thoroughly afterward.
  • If your apple chips are not fully crisp after baking and cooling, you can return them to the oven for an additional 15-30 minutes at the same low temperature.
  • These apple chips are a great alternative to store-bought snacks and can be a healthy option for school lunches.
